Everyone has their own Easter traditions - for some it’s fish and chips on Good Friday, a lamb on Easter Sunday and probably a spring walk at some point in between.
For me it’s a trip to my favourite cafe on the outskirts of Bristol for an extremely decadent Easter-egg topped freakshake.
The Beehive Coffee House in Downend is one of those places you kind of have to know about to visit as it’s tucked away on a little high street on the outskirts of Bristol.
The quaint venue only has about a dozen or so tables inside, there is some outdoor seating as well, but it has remained one of my favourite lunch spots in all of Bristol.
It does what I call simple, nostalgic café food - jacket potatoes, paninis with chips, there’s a full breakfast menu and sandwiches.
Last year it also added an Asian food menu that they serve during the usual day-time opening hours - as well as during the evening from Wednesday to Saturday.
But for me the Beehive’s crowning glory is its spectacular looking ‘freakshakes'.
I’m not going to lie - I’ve had a few of them over the years - trying out the different flavours and creations the team come up with.
But in the run up to Easter a visit to the cafe is an absolute must in my calendar for one reason - because their Easter-themed freakshakes come with an entire Easter egg on top.

For those of you unsure what a freakshake is, it's a thick milkshake, topped with a doughnut, whipped cream, pretzels, a wafer and other sweet treats depending on which flavour you have gone for.
But the Beehive Easter shakes have become a thing of legend - because as well as all the sweet treats you get on a regular shake you also get an entire chocolate egg on top.
This year at The Beehive the Easter specials include The ‘White’ One, a Dirty Bunny and a Terry’s Bunny - the perfect treat for those people who don’t think a Terry’s chocolate orange is just for Christmas.
During my visit this time I went for the Dirty Bunny shake, which is chocolate flavoured milkshake topped with a doughnut, whipped cream, and Easter egg filled with chocolate buttons, a chocolate bunny, pretzels, chocolate buttons and a wafer straw. The saucer around the glass was then filled with marshmallows.
I honestly dread to know the calorie count - but at the time I didn’t care one bit. Part of the draw is that they just look impressive.
You can audibly hear the gasps when the team brings them out from behind the counter and serves them.
As always I didn’t manage to finish all the extras that came with it - the doughnut and the Easter egg both came home with me. The milkshake was thick and creamy and tasted delicious, and the rim of the glass was dipped in Nutella with chocolate bits stuck to it.
The Beehive still remains one of the must-visit places for anyone who’s never been - and if you can fit in a visit this weekend when the Easter freakshakes are still on offer then even better.
You can find The Beehive at 14 Badminton Road, Downend. It is open Good Friday and Easter Saturday 9am to 4.30pm and 11am to 3.30pm on Easter Sunday. The cafe is closed on Monday.
