An official announcement from CNN is still forthcoming, but Roy Wood Jr himself spilled the beans this weekend: Have I Got News For You will return for a third season this fall.
Wood dropped the news at the top of the show’s Season 2 finale this past Saturday night after playing a clip of CNN anchor Dana Bash stating for the record (despite Donald Trump’s claims to the contrary) that “CNN does not hate our country.”
Wood tagged that clip with a message of his own: “And to prove that CNN doesn’t hate you, they’re bringing us back for another season. We will see you in the fall.”
Premiering in September 2024, the American adaptation of the long-running British series has been well-received by critics and audiences alike.
Airing on what has traditionally been a dead night for cable news, Have I Got News For You has been a strong ratings performer for CNN on Saturday nights, where it has often outperformed the network’s weekday primetime shows. The show also streams the next day on Max.
Though it’s not technically a late-night show (since it airs at 9pm), late night is in HIGNFY‘s DNA, and its success has been a rare glimmer of hope at a time of contraction for the time period. (The show is staffed with quite a few late night vets, including most prominently host Wood, along with Amber Ruffin and Michael Ian Black who serve as the show’s team captains.)
As LateNighter’s Bill Carter noted in a recent sit-down with the show’s creative team, for executive producer Jim Biederman, the show’s success has been a long time coming. Biederman had produced four different pilots for an American adaptation of Have I Got News For You over twenty years before CNN CEO Mark Thompson finally picked it up, seeing a way to match it with the replays of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher on Saturday nights.
No word yet on exactly when in the fall the show the return, nor whether CNN has upped its episode order this go-around. (Seasons 1 and 2 comprised just 10 episodes each.) We’ll keep you updated.

I interviewed for a job as a researcher on one of the pilots for this show 20 years ago.

Double the number of episodes! We love watching Roy and his crew. Although I know nothing about what it takes to make the show, my guess is that it wouldn’t be too hard to just keep the ball rolling for 20 shows. A girl can dream.

The 10 episode cap for a season is lame. We need this show every week.
